MONTH IN REVIEW

MAY 2022

6/8/2022

Note from Jen
Hi there! I'm Jen Ashby, the Executive Director of Ministries at Neighborhood Church, where summer feels upon us as temperatures rise and schools begin the countdown of the academic year.  This month, we celebrated two people connected with our congregation who said their first "yes" to Jesus! We also supported one another through health concerns and losses. We gathered to worship, pray, and serve, and we sensed God working in and through us. As you read the following summary of our month together, please take a moment to pray for Neighborhood Church, and listen for any way that God is prompting you to lean in.

MINISTRIES

Neighborhood Kids
Leader: Karin Sauder, [email protected]
A safe place for children to know Jesus, grow in Jesus & learn to go share Jesus.

This month the theme for Neighborhood Kids was "Resilience". We studied examples from the Bible about how God's servants relied on Him to get through difficult times without becoming discouraged or giving up , and how God wants to  help US get back up when life knocks us down. NKids also said a sad goodbye to Andreas, Erianna, Augustus, and Aurelius Ramos as they move away to begin a new chapter in their lives. We will miss them, but we wish them luck and great adventures in their new home.  Finally, but most importantly, we rejoice with the Ott Family as Evelyn said her first YES to Jesus! Welcome to God’s Family, Evie!

Neighborhood Youth
Leader: Tim Allen, [email protected]
A place for teens to meet Jesus, know Jesus & be encouraged to share Jesus.

In the month of May, Neighborhood Youth started a word study of the Shema prayer found in Deuteronomy 6:4-5. Each week has sparked really great conversation! You can check out this study from the Bible Project: https://bibleproject.com/explore/video/shema-listen/

Neighborhood Groups
Leader: Jen Ashby, [email protected]
Our primary venue for making friends, inviting God's transformation through Scripture and prayer, and living on mission together.

Our groups are on a summer break. Fall groups will launch in September. Meanwhile, mark your calendars for church-wide socials on June 26, July 23, and August 21. These casual, outdoor events for all ages are a great place to make and deepen friendships. Watch the At Neighborhood e-newsletter and our website for the details for each event, and RSVP to let us know you're coming.  Big thanks to the Neelys, Browns, and Homans for coordinating these events!

Missions Team
Leader: Jen Ashby, [email protected]
We are launched on His mission from our neighborhoods to the nations. (Acts 1:8)
  • We observed Great Commission Day on May 29 with special emphasis on the global work of our denomination, The Christian & Missionary Alliance. If you missed it, you'll want to check out this video:  https://cmalliance.org/video/great-commission-day-2022-jesus-among-africas-urban-poor/
  • We continued with monthly bagged breakfasts for Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless on May 15.  Thanks to Cathy Boss and Sarah & Keith Luse who coordinate this!
  • The 5th season of the Derwood Farmers Market is up and running every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm through September 3. This is a major way that we work together to show Jesus with our actions and share Jesus with our words with our community. In May, we hosted a collection drive for Shady Grove Pregnancy Center, had a volunteer from the community join our team for a couple of weeks, and started interviews for our cookbook project, which opened opportunities to pray with and for some of our vendors. The market is really something special, and it's only possible if we engage. Come be part of what God is doing! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0d4baaa929a5fd0-derwood1

Connections Team
Leader:  Contact Jen Ashby, [email protected]
We will be a community that is authentic, transparent & creates space for real relationships (Acts 2:42)

Almost every Sunday, we have first time guests at Neighborhood Church, in addition to newer and regular attenders. When they pull in, welcome flags are out, doors are unlocked, lights are on, someone is here to greet them and answer their questions, and after the service, hot coffee is waiting. This is the work of the Welcome Team, a faithful group of ten people, some of whom are serving in other capacities as well. We are so grateful for them! This team is in need of a leader. If you have a heart for hospitality, ask Jen Ashby for more information about this ministry and leadership role.

LEADERSHIP

Staff
Mark Trinkl, Jen Ashby, Tim Allen, Linnea Allen, Melanie Neely, Karin Sauder & Dana Zetterberg

Leader: Mark Trinkl, [email protected]

The staff manages Neighborhood Church ministry teams.

The Neighborhood Church staff are working hard and thriving. Jen Ashby, Executive Director of Ministries, is leading staff meetings, etc. during the season of Pastor Mark's sabbatical. Of special note, Tim & Linnea Allen celebrated a wedding anniversary and Karin Sauder celebrated a birthday in May!

Elders

Mark Trinkl, Evan Homan, Steve Beardsley, Mark Neely, Jim Mullen & Keith Luse

Leader: Mark Trinkl, [email protected]

The Elders shepherd and give spiritual oversight to Neighborhood Church.

The elders continue to meet regularly for prayer and spiritual discussion.  We pray for many things, including our local church body, as well as praying for greater gospel impact in our community and the world.  We also pray consistently for people in our spheres of influence to say their first yes to Jesus.  If anyone ever needs prayer for healing or any reason or would just like to talk about what is on your heart and mind, please contact any of the elders: Steve Beardsley, Evan Homan, Keith Luse, Jim Mullen, or Mark Neely.  Or you may contact any of the pastoral staff: Mark Trinkl (currently on sabbatical), Jen Ashby, or Tim Allen.
