Note from Pastor Mark As lead pastor, Pastor Mark leads the church within the boundaries set by the BOG. Throughout the month of August, I had the incredible privilege of going and visiting family in South Korea. My wife, Nami, had not seen her mom in 7 years and my children barely remembered, if at all, visiting there before. During our time there, Nami had the great joy of leading her mom to Jesus. Please be praying that she continues to grow in her commitment to Jesus. For many of us, August was filled with last vacations of summer, and preparation for the fall semester. My hope in all of the seasons of life that we would look towards Jesus and his purpose and not just get wrapped up in the here and now. Prayer (Praying for a Team Leader) We desire to be a church that prays eagerly. For this year, we have planned 12 prayer initiatives as we pray for God’s transformative work in our friends’ and family’s lives. We have been praying for friends and families, for the Farmers Market, for our community, and the world. We desire to see a minimum of 12 people encounter Jesus and have their lives transformed. So far, we have seen five people say “yes” to Jesus. Let’s keep praying for more! During our Sunday Gatherings, the prayer room is open to go and pray by yourself or with others. We are also seeking out a point person to raise the temperature of prayer in and beyond DAC. Would you consider being this person? If you are interested, please contact Pastor Mark. Pastor Mark - [email protected] Worship Team The Music and A/V team provide a quality and distraction free environment to worship Jesus Christ. It is exciting to be adding more people to the worship team. Both the A/V and worship teams are always open to adding more techs and musicians. If you have any interest in joining the worship team, contact Hector Ayerdiz. If you’d enjoy the A/V side of the Sunday Gatherings, contact Matthew Sutton. Local: The missions team met on August 8th and decided to pursue an agreement with Milk Lady Markets for a 2019 Derwood Farmers Market season. We’re looking forward to hosting another season of this market! This past month, DAC contributed school supplies to Montgomery County Coalition's Back to School Fair, and Laura Hessler and Jen Ashby served at the event on August 28. Global: The team also agreed to begin an ongoing partnership with the Alliance work in Paris. Jen Ashby will be the champion for this partnership. The team postponed the November 2018 mission trip to El Salvador due to Tony Escalante being out of the country at that time, as well as lack of critical mass of trip applications. The team is working on dates for an early 2019 trip to El Salvador. In their meeting on the 8th, the team also Skyped with Jesse Blaine, a missionary with Society of Anglican Missionaries & Senders in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. DAC has been financially supporting Jesse for several years. Explorers Children's Ministry launched centralized check-in on Sunday, August 12 to increase our safety and security. Thanks to all for your patience and flexibility as we implement a new system. Also, thanks to Trudy and Dave Schwarz who hosted another knock-out Explorers Campfire and Camp Out on August 24-25, complete with flashlights, glow sticks, fireworks and loads of fun! Bethany Clemmons - [email protected] Vision Youth Ministry Vision Youth is a vital part of training up the younger generation of disciples and leaders. Vision Youth took its summer break during the month of August. During this break, the leaders met to pray and brainstorm for the next couple of years ahead. We’re excited for what is planned so far and can’t wait to see how God will use this ministry to impact the lives of our students. We pray that every Vision student will graduate high school fully in love with Jesus. If you are interested in getting your teen connected or volunteering, please talk to Tim Allen. Tim Allen – [email protected] Small Groups Small groups are a great place to make friends, pray, study the Bible, and live on mission. At a small group ministry meeting on August 1, we reviewed the survey data from the last two semesters, and discussed to what extent small groups are helping people make friends, experience transformation, and live on mission. The answer: a lot! We also dreamed together about small group ministry for the future, and discussed our upcoming fall semester. On August 26, registration opened with five groups for the fall semester, all focused on "Gospel Fluency." Jen Ashby – [email protected] Connections Team At DAC, we value authentic community and our Connections Team plays a big part in connecting us in community. Thank you for the continued service of our greeters, ushers, coffee team and more. Your service provides a welcoming environment at DAC. Wendy Geraci – [email protected] Building and Grounds God has given us a great location and property and we strive to be good stewards of these gifts. We desire to have a physical location that enhances our neighborhood and attracts people to Jesus. As part of this we will be resurfacing the parking lot. Thank you for your generous donations towards this project. If you are interested in helping care for our property, contact Mark Neely. Mark Neely - [email protected] Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit On August 9-10, some of the staff and ministry leaders attended Willow Creek’s Global Leadership Summit. It proved to be another valuable time of gleaning wisdom and insights from notable leaders. From this summit, the staff decided to read, “Driven by Difference, How Great Companies Fuel Innovation Through Diversity,” a book by one of the speakers, David Livermore. We look forward to learning from this book as we continue to strive towards becoming more of a multi-ethnic, multi-generational church. Over the summer, we have taken a break from leadership development but are looking at how we can continue to invest in both present and future leaders to make them effective for God’s purposes.
Staff The staff manages ministry and meets weekly. The staff continues to meet on a regular basis to pray, plan, and pursue after the mission of being a multi-ethnic, multi-generational church being transformed by Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit and launched on mission. As stated earlier, the staff is excited to read the book picked out from the Global Leadership Summit, “Driven by Difference.” We trust it will better equip us as a diverse team. Elders The Elders shepherd and give spiritual oversight to DAC. DAC’s elders meet monthly for a time of prayer and discussion on how to best provide care for the church. Please pray with us. Also, if you ever need prayer, please let the Elders know through your Sunday Prayer Card. They would love to pray for and with you. Current Elders: Mark Trinkl, Evan Homan, Eric Zetterberg, Steve Beardsley, Kyle Ott, Andrew Black, and Mark Neely Mark Trinkl – [email protected] Board of Governance (BOG) The Board of Governance sets boundaries for the Pastor and meets quarterly.
