Note from Pastor Mark As lead pastor, Pastor Mark leads the church within the boundaries set by the BOG. Can you believe the summer is winding down so fast? June and July have been a blur for me but with many great memories of summer. For me, summer is a time to refresh, take a bit more time with family and prepare for another full year of church, children and so much more. However your life, be it slow or fast, filled with activities or wide open, I would encourage you to take time and discover or rediscover who this Jesus is and how he relates to every aspect of your life. The change of season is a great time to recalibrate life and relationships and for you to find even more life, especially in your relationship with Jesus. I also encourage you to join in the many opportunities to grow in your faith over the fall. From small groups, to Global Encounters, to youth and children. There are opportunities for everyone. Let’s fully participate in the life God has for us and see how he transforms us, empowers us with his Spirit, and launches us on mission. Prayer (Praying for a Team Leader) We desire to be a church that prays eagerly. For this year, we have planned 12 prayer initiatives as we pray for God’s transformative work in our friends and family’s lives. We desire to see a minimum of 12 people encounter Jesus and have their lives transformed. So far, we have seen four people say “yes” to Jesus. Let’s keep praying for more! During our Sunday Gatherings, the prayer room is open to go and pray by yourself or with others. We are also seeking out a point person to raise the temperature of prayer in and beyond DAC. Would you consider being this person? If you are interested, please contact Pastor Mark. Pastor Mark - [email protected] Worship Team The Music and A/V team provide a quality and distraction free environment to worship Jesus Christ. Both the A/V and worship teams are always open to adding more techs and musicians. If you have any interest in joining the worship team, contact Hector Ayerdiz. If you’d enjoy the A/V side of the Sunday Gatherings, contact Matthew Sutton. Local: On June 10th, DAC hosted its Annual Help the Homeless Community Walk to raise funds for MCCH. Later that evening, a handful went to the Gude Men’s Shelter to help serve a hot meal to the clients. The Farmers Market is now in the second half of the season! After conducting a survey for our market volunteers and talking with our neighbors during the market, we have received positive feedback. Please continue to pray that this market would bless our community and our consideration of another season. Global: Our team of six had a great experience working with Envision Paris this past June/July. It was an eye-opening trip to what God is up to in the city of Paris. Upon their return, the team gave reports during the Sunday Gatherings on July 8th and during the Feast of Nations on July 15th. God is at work in Paris and we are excited to see how we can be a part of it. The trip to El Salvador, co-led by Andrew Black and Emily Harr, has been postponed. This trip is open to adults and teens. Contact either Emily or Andrew for more information. Explorers Children’s Ministry has been ramping up its safety and security this summer with a new centralized Check-In system being implemented in August. There are now manned kiosks in the entry near the Welcome Center where parents/guardians can check in their children within seconds and print a name tag. Windows were also installed in the classroom doors so that doors can remain closed but still maintain transparency. So far, these changes have been going well and we are grateful for your patience! Bethany Clemmons - [email protected] Vision Youth Ministry Vision Youth is a vital part of training up the younger generation of disciples and leaders. To kick off the start of summer, Vision Youth headed over to First Alliance Church in Silver Spring to join their youth group, Beacon, for a lock-in. The students had a great time staying up all night playing games and watching movies. On Wednesday evenings for the month of June, Vision took a deeper look into Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son. In July, we enjoyed a movie night and a day at Six Flags. If you are interested in getting your teen connected or volunteering please talk to Tim Allen. Tim Allen – [email protected] Small Groups Small groups are a great place to make friends, pray, study the Bible, and live on mission. In June we wrapped up an eight week Emotionally Healthy Relationships Course, which was a mid-sized group meeting in the cafe on Wednesday evenings. The course was all about practical skills to equip us to follow God's commands to love each other well. What a blast to see this multi-generational, multi-ethnic group pair up to practice communication skills, and to hear how real-life practice went during the week! We're still gathering feedback from the group, but we may offer this again sooner rather than later. Jen Ashby – [email protected] Connections Team At DAC, we value authentic community and our Connections Team plays a big part in connecting us in community. Thank you for the continued service of our greeters, ushers, coffee team and more. Your service provides a welcoming environment at DAC. Wendy Geraci – [email protected] Building and Grounds God has given us a great location and property and we strive to be good stewards of these gifts. We desire to have a physical location that enhances our neighborhood and attracts people to Jesus. If you are interested in helping care for our property, contact Mark Neely. Mark Neely - [email protected] SEEK June 1-2 On June 1-2, a group of DAC households headed up to Lancaster, PA for the SEEK Conference. This conference through the Christian & Missionary Alliance, has been created for those who earnestly seek a deeper and continual abiding in the presence of God’s Holy Spirit. Six Flags On July 18, a group headed over to Six Flags for the day! The weather was perfect and the lines were short. It was a fun day for all to connect and play! Farewell to Don & Bonnie Shelton After 32 years at Derwood Alliance Church, Don and Bonnie retired and moved to South Carolina. Over the years they have served in too many capacities to list. Their love and faithful service has helped the church and honored Jesus in many ways. They will be greatly missed but we are also excited for their retirement. In June the Leaders of DAC completed an assessment by Total SDI on their Motivational Value System (MVS), Strengths Portrait, and Overdone Strengths. The goal was to be able to understand what motivates each of us and how we can better work with one another. It has been helpful to see more clearly what motivates our team and now, taking that information and applying it practically. Our desire in all areas of ministry is to actively pursue and apprentice new leaders. We desire to be a church that empowers people into servant leadership positions. If you are interested in discovering how you can use your gifts and abilities at DAC, please let us know. Staff The staff manages ministry and meets weekly. The staff continues to meet on a regular basis to pray, plan, and pursue after the mission of being a multi- ethnic, multi-generational church being transformed by Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit and launched on mission. Elders The Elders shepherd and give spiritual oversight to DAC. DAC’s elders meet monthly for a time of prayer and discussion on how to best provide care for the church. Please pray with us. Also, if you ever need prayer, please let the Elders know through your Sunday Prayer Card. They would love to pray for and with you. Current Elders: Mark Trinkl, Evan Homan, Eric Zetterberg, Steve Beardsley, Kyle Ott, Andrew Black, and Mark Neely Mark Trinkl – [email protected] Board of Governance (BOG) The Board of Governance sets boundaries for the Pastor and meets quarterly.
