NOTE FROM MARK “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20) A term which has been used in the church for a long time is, “the crucified life”, a life which is formed around the death of Jesus, so that in turn we can live for him. Often in a world that is about making the best life for yourself, it is easy to lose track of the call to come and lay our lives down for Jesus. The Apostle Paul talked about this in more than one of his writings (Romans 12:1-2, Philippians 2:5-11). Jesus also talked about the crucified life (Matthew 10:38, 16:24, Mark 8:34, Luke 9:23, 14:27). It is clear from both Paul and Jesus, if we wanted to find life in him we must lay down our lives. Does this mean we stop living? No. What it does mean is we stop living for ourselves and begin to live for God. God becomes number one, over our career, retirement, family, comfort, entertainment, money and more. He is the one we live for. Each day, we must make a choice who we are living for. In Romans 12:1, the Apostle Paul talks about us laying down our lives as living sacrifice. I have heard it said, the only problem with a living sacrifice is it can crawl off the altar. My prayer for you is to either for the first time give your life fully to God, or if you have already done so, to crawl back up on the altar to give yourself again to God. MINISTRIESNEIGHBORHOOD KIDS Leader: Karin Sauder, [email protected] A safe place for children to meet Jesus, know Jesus & learn to share Jesus. What a busy and wonderful month! The Little Kids completed their Fruits of the Spirit summer curriculum with a book that they created and a song they learned. The Big Kids completed their Books of the Bible curriculum for the summer with a beautiful poster that they created of all the books. Many of them memorized the verse that goes with it: “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16). We are finishing up with a big ice cream social for all Neighborhood Kids and volunteers to celebrate! We had our last kid’s tent of the season at the Farmer’s Market, and we are looking forward to seeing all of our community friends again next year. Our first parents’ email newsletter, “The Park Bench” went out this month. We are really excited about this, and we hope you got your copy in your inbox. If you did not and you would like it, please email me at [email protected], and I will be sure to subscribe you. During our small group season, I will be hosting a kid’s discipleship group for older elementary students who have accepted Jesus and are ready to go deeper in their life with him. I am really looking forward to this. And the biggest news! Jean Zelaya, one of our rising 6th graders, said his first “yes” to Jesus this summer and will light his lightbox in September! We rejoice with him on this major decision and can’t wait to support him as he grows in his relationship with God. There are so many great things happening in Neighborhood Kids! We are looking forward to a new school year and all the exciting things coming up! NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH Leader: Tim Allen, [email protected] A place for teens to meet Jesus, know Jesus & be encouraged to share Jesus. Neighborhood Youth took their August Break this past month. While they didn’t meet on Tuesday evenings, they enjoyed a fun end of the summer pool party at the Neely’s (thank you Mark & Mel for your generosity and hospitality!), and the leaders met to plan and pray for the next ministry season! We’re looking forward to our Fall Kick Off on Tuesday, September 12! Students are encouraged to invite their friends for this fun night - water games, food truck, free NYouth shirts - it's going to be a great night! WORSHIP & PRODUCTION TEAM Leader: Mel Neely, [email protected] We are a diverse community of followers of Jesus Christ, empowered by His Spirit with one heart and one mind to invite and lead in declaring His worth. The Neighborhood Church Worship & Production team continues to lift high the name of Jesus through our in person and online services. This month, Mel Neely and Adaora led worship during our Sunday services along with our dedicated team of instrumentalists and vocalists. We are thankful to welcome Bryan Patton to the team! Bryan is a gifted instrumentalist who will serve on electric guitar, bass and drums as well as advise on the production side. Welcome, Bryan! On Thursday evenings the team engaged with devotionals reinforcing our Nehemiah series. These times were led by Eric, Holly and Mel. We shared praises and prayer requests, praying for each other and over Neighborhood Church. On Saturday, August 13, Mel, Donna, Honna, Richard, Eric and Holly brought sounds of HOPE to the Derwood Market. We are thankful to lift high the Name of Jesus among our neighbors. We continue to pray for God to use the music shared to draw people to Him. Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes! Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals. Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD ! Praise the LORD ! Psalm 150: 4-6 Our Worship & Production team continues to thrive under the leadership of Jeff Geraci. We are thankful to have a truly multigenerational team with middle school, high school and adult volunteers working together to make our Sunday services in person and online possible. We continue to implement what we learned about mixing at our May training and are routinely using click tracks at our Thursday practices and now on Sunday mornings. BECAUSE of God's faithfulness, our Worship Team is living on mission as a multi-ethnic, multigenerational team being transformed by Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit and inviting the Neighborhood Church family to be launched on mission with them!
